Dhaka, Bangladesh – On Austrian National Day 2024, SERAC-Bangladesh and its Executive Director, SM Shaikat, received the prestigious Intercultural Achievement Award from the Austrian Government. The award ceremony, held at Radisson Blu Water Garden Hotel in Dhaka, was graced by Ambassador Katharina Wieser, who personally presented the accolade.
The award recognizes Peace Adda, a visionary idea of SM Shaikat turned into a pioneering youth-led initiative launched in 2017 to promote intercultural dialogue, social cohesion, and understanding. Inspired by the tragic Holy Artisan Attack in 2016, SM Shaikat created Peace Adda as a response to the societal divisions that emerged, aiming to build trust and compassion through youth engagement and open conversation.
Reflecting on the inspiration behind Peace Adda, Shaikat shared, “The initiative was born from a moment of deep reflection after the attack, making me realize the critical need for spaces where young people could build trust and understanding to prevent future tragedies.” He also emphasized the honor of receiving the award on Austrian National Day, celebrating shared values of unity and togetherness.

Peace Adda has since become a model for youth-led peacebuilding, challenging divisive ideologies and fostering harmony across communities. From protecting religious and cultural sites to supporting recovery efforts during social upheavals, the program has demonstrated the transformative power of youth action.
Ambassador Wieser commended the initiative, stating, “Programs like Peace Adda are vital for building communities rooted in trust and resilience. We are proud to present this award to SM Shaikat and SERAC-Bangladesh.”

The event was attended by dignitaries, youth leaders, and supporters of intercultural dialogue. This award marks a significant milestone for SERAC-Bangladesh in its mission to empower youth and promote social harmony, furthering its commitment to creating a more inclusive and peaceful world.
